What to Look for In an Alcohol Treatment Center
Here are some additional qualities to look for when searching for the right alcohol rehab center for you or a loved one.
Investigate the quality of the rehab center’s program. Keeping clients engaged can be a challenge, and you want staff that’s aware of this and programs accordingly. An effective alcohol rehab center should feature the following four characteristics: focus, variety, flexibility, and intensity.
1. Focus – A program shouldn’t try to cover too much too soon, which is more likely to happen with shorter stays. An alcohol rehab center that bases its programming on the 12 steps shouldn’t be trying to get all of its clients through all of the steps in 60 days.
An alcohol rehab center should also focus on the types of disorders it treats. For example, effectively treating both eating disorders and alcohol addiction is a challenge, so if the program promises to provide both types of services, investigate whether or not it has the staff and facilities to achieve this objective.
2. Variety – Keeping clients engaged in the process can be difficult, so variety is important. This is especially important at alcohol rehab centers that restrict access to off-site activities. From the program’s curriculum to on-site activities to the eating environment, all aspects of an alcohol treatment program play a role in keeping clients involved in the recovery process.
3. Flexibility – Flexibility is valuable from the moment a client walks through the door, to the day she completes the program and goes home. Though all addictions have some similarities, every client is different and will have different needs. To that end, the staff-to-client ratio should allow for personalized treatment.
4. Intensity– A program’s intensity level is determined, in part, by the daily schedule that’s developed for the clients. It’s less important to find a program that’s high on intensity, and more important to find a program where the level of intensity fits the client. A person who’s been an alcoholic for years will likely need a more intense, more structured program to help break long-term habits than will a person who is suffering from a relatively lower-grade addiction.
As experts develop a more effective understanding of addiction and recovery, many alcohol treatment centers are beginning to see the value of treating the whole person, not just the addiction. A significant number of alcohol rehab specialists have realized that recovery is more effective when physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are all addressed. Try to find an effective alcohol rehab center that takes a more holistic approach and addresses more than just the addiction itself.
Again, remember that finding the right alcohol treatment center will take a little time. Do your best to avoid making a rash decision based on fear or panic. The time you take in the beginning of your search process will help ensure that you or your loved one enters an alcohol rehab program that offers the greatest likelihood of long-term success.
